In Hawaiian folklore, there was a beautiful girl named Lehua who lived on the island of Kauai. She was deeply in love with a young warrior named Ohi'a. But one day, while Ohi'a was away on a journey, Lehua was turned into a hibiscus flower by a jealous rival.
Ohi'a returned to find Lehua missing and searched everywhere for her, but to no avail. In his despair, he too was turned into a tree. The two trees grew side by side, and every night, they would bloom together. The hibiscus, which was Lehua, would bloom with delicate, red petals, and the Ohi'a tree would sprout clusters of red berries, symbolizing the love between them.
This legend explains the Hawaiian belief that when hibiscus flowers and Ohi'a trees bloom together, it is a sign of a strong and enduring love.
